Lagatera embroidery is the Spanish variant of the technique otherwise known as Holbein embroidery or blackwork. The motifs are clearly inspired by Moorish art, the original designs being purely ornamental. The embroidery is worked with contrasting thread on even-weave linen or aida cloth; very attractive examples of coloured embroidery are shown and step-for-step instructions given. Most of the patterns are reworked versions of old models, some are new designs. The explanations are clear, the stitch and working diagrams are good, with many coloured illustrations.
