Exhibition pieces in museums are interesting to look at; but one can appreciate them properly only if one makes the effort to find out how they were once made. However, many handicrafts have died out and first have to be re-invented.

That also applies to lacemaking. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the Aemilia Ars society in Bologna (Italy) took as their model old needlelace, e.g. from the pattern books of the 16th and 17th centuries, and attempted to make faithful copies. The techniques of punto in aria, reticella, satin and bullion stitches were put to use together with elements of intagliatela. Even today this mixture of stitches is characteristic of the typical Aemilia Ars embroideries.

During their search for old documents, the group also studied old sketches and designs and compared them with actual lace samples; in this book the results of this research are reported.

Extensive text, some illustrations, no patterns for you to work. Rather a contribution to historical research; for those interested in textile science.
