Irish white on white embroidery, developed in the middle of the 19th century in the textile centre of Mountmellick, forgotten – and then rediscovered at the end of the 20th century. The motifs: leaves, ferns, flowers, berries. Characteristic is the raised texture of the embroidery, which is achieved by the use of French knots and padding under the motifs, and so the interplay of light and shade. – After a historical introduction, the stitches used (and there are many!) are described clearly with text and diagrams. The traditional knitting on of the fringes is explained briefly. There follow numerous patterns which are included in the appendix in the form of outline drawings. Illustrations of the finished pieces, texts explaining how to work them.
