Luzine Happel makes use here of an old outlined pattern from the Schwalm to explain, step by step, the fundamentals of Schwalm whitework. She begins by discussing materials (threads, cloth, needles), the transfer of the pattern onto the cloth; then follow the first stitches (French knots, stem stitch, satin stitch, chain stitch) and fillings such as Limetrose and bullion. Always the work is done on the sampler, and – to make it easier to follow – many details are embroidered with coloured thread; that is simply easier to see than white on white. For the fillings threads are drawn, at the end the work is hemmed.

Everything is very carefully explained and when you have worked through the book you can also put your own designs together and work them. Inspiration can be found, e.g., in the book by Christine Bishop: Schwalm Embroidery (our No. 654).
