DIE GRAMMATIK DES TÜLLS / THE GRAMMAR OF POINT GROUND

Text: German & English

Point ground lace was worked everywhere in the lacemaking world, especially in the 19th century. Many regions had their own versions of this lace, with respect to both the kinds of patterns and the technical details.

Ulrike Voelcker does not make an attempt to trace these specific historical forms. In the 19th century this lace was still made as a livelihood, against the competition of machine lace, and so it had to be worked quickly. Today we can afford to take more time to ensure a beautiful result and this book aims to provide the necessary help.

On 160 pages Ulrike Voelcker explains the special features of net ground and presents in many diagrams the methods which make exact work possible. The topics covered include threads, pin thicknesses, angle of the ground, adding and removing pairs, honeycomb net, gimp threads, footsides and headsides, picots, decorations, corners, beginning and ending the work.

30 pages with patterns follow, intended for the practising of details so that the lacemaker can develop confidence in working point ground lace.

Its detailed diagrams will make this book an essential standard work. Beginners’ knowledge of point ground lace is assumed.
