Rosemary Shepherd has spent decades deciphering the techniques used in early bobbin lace. In this process, she not only referred to the oldest pattern books from the 16th century (Le Pompe and Nüw Modelbuoch), she also studied surviving lace from museums and private collections and, most especially, representations of lace in early paintings. In some such cases, especially in pictures painted before 1500, it is questionable whether the textiles shown in the paintings really were made with bobbin lace techniques.

On the basis of about 30 examples, the author explains how the old lace was reconstructed and the techniques which are necessary to make it. For the book does not show only relatively primitive lace; rather the patterns are for complex plaited lace which can be reproduced only with the help of detailed thread diagrams.

For those interested in history, fans of freehand lace and lacemakers who want to try some rather unusual patterns.
